Not good.

That’s pretty much all you can say about what happened in St. Louis last night. It’s amazing how quickly this team can go from crisp, good baseball to error prone, terrible ball. It’s unbelievable. And as for John Maine: what in the world is going on with this guy? What happened to his ability to strike batters out?

Last year, Maine’s BB/9 was 3.53, his K/9 was 8.48, and his K/BB was 2.4. This year, for whatever reason, it’s drastically changed. BB/9 3.85, K/8 7.34, K/BB 1.9. What happened to his out pitch? We have a new pitching coach who’s supposedly fixed Ollie Perez (again) — you think maybe he can remind John what a “strikeout pitch” looks like?

This team just flat-out refuses to get above .500.

As for the 3 errors… I’ve been on co-ed, slow-pitch softball teams that have gotten through games with less than three errors and some of my teammates were drunk girls. Yes, I feel comfortable making that comparison because we don’t get paid.
