Remember two days ago when I said that the media would quickly move on to find a new storyline now that Willie was gone? Turns out, they did — Tom Bernazard.
Gotham Baseball has printed a report showing the intrigue and shenanigans that go on in the Mets front office. The account is kind of disturbing, really. On the surface, you know that the office of a baseball team is like any other job where a lot of money is at stake based on performance, promotions, and sucking up. It’s just disturbing to see that aired out under the daylight. It’s also really, really bad when it can be intimated that you’re affecting the bottom line.
If this stuff coming out about Bernazard is true, then he’s adversely affecting the company’s product and needs to go. In no world is undermining the authority of your middle managers good. In this world, where your middle manager is directly responsible for the performance and quality of your product, it’s supremely stupid. If Omar is allowing all this to happen on his watch then he’s a bad GM. Period. If the buck stops with you (and I realize that it finally stops with the Wilpons) then you have to be sure everyone is on the same page — not in every situation, but generally on the same page. If guys aren’t on the same page they need to not be there. There is no situation in which Omar looks good. If he didn’t know about it, why didn’t he know about it? If he did know about it and didn’t fix the problem, why didn’t he fix the problem?
This organization is thisclose to being the Knicks.
And that’s not a good place to be.
