So, let’s see if we can make this a recurring feature. The Mets are 30-28, 3rd place, and 3.5 games back. This is the first of a four game set in Petco Park in San Diego.

1) Pelfrey is an enigma wrapped in a conundrum. He must have went to the Al Leiter school of inning stress. Twice in this game he managed to load up the bases

2) Gary lets us know that our mind is playing tricks on us when we think the Mets get dominated by young pitchers, letting us know that in their last 10 starts against rookie pitchers, the pitchers are 3-3 with a 5.14 ERA.

3) Apparently tired of complementing Carlos Beltran’s “gazelle-like” running stride, Keith has moved on to complimenting Ryan Church’s “cannon-like” arm.

4) The differences in different stadiums and fan bases are unreal. In the fifth inning, Pelfrey gave up a double and two walks. When Rick Peterson went out to the mound to counsel him you could have heard a pin drop in the ballpark. It’s like West Coast fans don’t want to be unfair to the visitors. Is it the cold over on this side of the country that make us more insane?

5) Is Khalil Greene the least white name for a white guy in in the major leagues? I think it has to be, right?

6) In years of watching baseball, this is the first I’ve heard of the rule that states “if you fall into the dugout on a catch the base runner is awarded a base.” The rule made very little sense to me until Gary read it on the air, which puts it in context of “if a guy dives into the stands and can’t get the ball back in play, the base runner can only move one base.” Interesting what replacing “awarded” with “only” can do to the context of a rule.

7) Church’s eyes still look like doll’s eyes. Dude needs to stop flying like yesterday.

8) Did Heath Bell eat Eric Gagne?

9) I guess the answer as to whether or not we’ll get good or evil Scott Schoenweiss was answered early as he walks the first batter.

10) And I stayed up to 1:08 am to see a walk-off HBP by Schoenweiss. Ugh.

Another completely ridiculous ND for Mike Pelfrey and another instance where the Mets got destroyed by a rookie pitcher. I don’t care what Gary says, I’m going to assume that 5.14 ERA is from the 3 losses and assume that the other 7 games were all shut-outs.

That said… nothing to panic about. When your 5-starter loses, it’s really not that big a deal.
